    Summer at last

    Cottonwood garden
At least for the coming week. Vancouverites are making the most of it in their shorts and sundresses, riding their bikes everywhere. The timing is excellent because our community garden is hosting its annual Friends and Family Day on Sunday, and it’s going to be wonderful. Tomorrow we prepa...

    blooming and setting fruit

Broad bean 'Green Windsor' Flowering and Cottonwood garden
Should have noted this ages ago, but just so relieved that they are doing well that I forgot to note when they started blooming.

    ticked off

    Cottonwood garden
Someone took all of the strawberries in my patch, which on Friday looked like they’d be ready today. Forget renovating the patch, I’m just going to tear the plants out. Theft at the community garden is rampant, the worst it’s been in the four years since I joined. Salad greens, ...

    Goutweed!

    Cottonwood garden
Most of today’s work was digging out the goutweed. First I forked it out, shook the soil off, and chucked it into the wheelbarrow. Then I sat and combed through the churned-up soil with a hand fork and pulled out any pieces of root I could still find. I managed to get through about 1/3 of t...

    Sostice gardening

    Cottonwood garden
I couldn’t spend today away from the garden, not when the weather’s warm and (kind of) sunny. I tore out the last of the goutweed by hand, intending to dig out that section of garden and screen out the roots. Then I can actually plant in it! Two barrow-loads of invasive weeds, twigs, ...

We're having one nice day before the rains come back

    Cottonwood garden
So I beetled down to the community garden and weeded like mad, cut back some shrubs on the berm, decimated the comfrey where it’s encroaching on the common path, and planted tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, nasturtiums, cilantro, dill, and some volunteer feverfew. Whew! I also sowed two rows o...

    Still too cold!

Cucumber 'Salad Bush' , Tomato 'Early girl' , and Cottonwood garden
It’s just as well that I didn’t get the cukes and tomatoes in on the weekend because I have to go out to the deck where they’re hardening off every evening to cover them, and every morning to uncover them, because the temps are below 10 degrees at night. If they were down at the...

too cold for Victoria Day weekend!

    Container garden
I’ve had to cover the tomatoes and cucumbers again because the temperature’s going below 10 degree Celsius. This is getting ridiculous.

    broad beans doing fairly well

Broad bean 'Green Windsor' and Cottonwood garden
They’ve got a lot of notching on the leaves (weevils), but the plants were big enough and vigourous enough that it won’t slow them down. They already need staking.

Another good day in the garden

    Cottonwood garden
Perfect weather: mild and overcast, especially good for transplanting. I put the broad beans and garlic into Bed 3 and cleared out the south end of Bed 4 beside the rhubarb for a row of climbing peas. I think that I got most, if not all, of the sunchokes out of that end of the bed. And the peas a...
