First cut of the year 1 Neutral Front garden
My daughter and I (mostly my daughter) gave the front ‘lawn’ a mow this afternoon. It was quite a rough cut and will need going over again before too long, but at least it should be easier the second time!

Tidying up - and first butterfly and honey bees of the year 1 2 Herb garden
My daughter and I have been having a good go at sprucing up the herb garden. We’ve been busy with shears, secateurs, loppers etc, trying to cut back all the old flower heads and general untidiness. I kept getting distracted by the occasional insect, brought out by the warmer weather. The ...

Bullfinches in the herb garden! 2 1 Very Happy
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked out of my bedroom window this morning and saw a pair of Bullfinches feeding on the buds of an ornamental prunus! I have seen Bullfinches in the garden before, but not for a number of years. They’re now pretty uncommon birds and so I’m abs...

More signs of spring... and why do I always seem to have the wrong lens on the camera? 1 Happy
A lovely bright day. I went down to the bottom of the garden to check on the progress of the winter aconites and snowdrops, taking just my macro lens. Typically, this meant that there were plenty of opportunities to photograph birds… all out of range of this lens. A grey heron rose up from ...

Nearly in flower Happy Winter aconite Budding and Woodland wildlife garden
Last weekend there was no sign of the winter aconites – but now they’re up and in bud. I’ll post a photo later if I remember.

Now in bud Happy Snowdrops Budding and Woodland wildlife garden
When I was down the garden recording birds for the Big Garden Birdwatch, I checked on the snowdrops and found that they have started to bud. No photos because no camera on me.

Big Garden Birdwatch 2009 2 Very Happy
I took part in the annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this afternoon for an hour between 2.15 – 3.15. Usually the birds disappear during my chosen hour – and sure enough this time wasn’t very exciting at first….. but then some wonderful unusual visitors appeared! Blackbird ...

Ivy berries - tiny lidded pots! 1 1 Happy Ivy and Front garden
I’ve never really taken a good look at ivy berries before – but when I took some close-up photos of the ivy in my front garden hedge I noticed that they look like tiny lidded pots… complete with handles!
