Turnips didn't make it 1 Unhappy
I pulled out the first of the stored turnips today, and got a handful of brown mush. I was able to salvage one big (size of a grapefruit) turnip, but all the rest that were put up for storage rotted. Note for next year: eat all the 1st run turnips, and store all the 2nd run turnips. The potatoe...

City likely to see first official snow tonight 6
ok, the big pict is from a big storm we had a few years ago… It’s wet and brown out right now. And dark. Here’s what the newspaper is saying: The Weather Service is calling for today’s rain, already turning to snow at higher elevations, to freeze into light snow tonight, ...

Hard Frost and cold storage 3
Took out the rest of my plants. Even though the thermometer says 44, there is frost on the ground and ice on the puddles in the shade. Winter is nigh. On a related note, it was cool enough today to bring the root veggies (potatoes, carrots, turnips and winter squash) in from the shed and into t...

what do you do with a guitar full of tomatoes? 6 1 Happy Tomato "big and early" Harvesting and Tomato "big and early" Harvesting
Salsa of course! Finally, my plants are hitting their stride and producing enough red tomatoes to put up for the winter. Woohoo! btw… it’s 62 and October here. Totally bizarre. All the snow has disappeared from the mountains, and I keep forgetting my coat at work.

what should I do with my tomatoes 9
I have about 8 medium tomatoes that are ready to harvest right now. Too many to eat at once (right now, it’s just me eating), but they don’t seem like enough to go through the canning process. I would really like to preserve this taste for a later time, but won’t if it isnR...

It has been below freezing consistently at night and in the 40’s and rainy during the day. Yesterday, I bundled up to put the gardens to bed. About an hour after I went outside, the sun came out. It turned into a beautifully sunny fall day. Here is what got accomplished: Harvested potat...

We went from 63 to 31 degrees in about 48 hours. While row covers can stop frost, they can’t stop plants from freezing when it is below freezing. Snow is in the forecast for tonight. Quite the rude awakening. I was able to do a big harvest before the cold came in though. The carrots an...

    row cover! 3 7
Let’s see how this goes. I have a strip for the middle if they call for frost, but I figure that if it gets sunny in the day and I am at work, my plants wont fry as they are now. Right now it’s high 50’s in the day and high 40’s at night.
