My first adventures in gardening were led by my grandmother, who kept a large vegetable garden until she was 92 years old. When I was about 4 she had me out in the garden helping to pull up grass and picking vegetables. Most children don’t like eating vegetables, but when you get to pick them yourself, it makes them fun to eat!
I found organic gardening during my teenage years, and have never used any other method since then. My vegetable and herb gardens have been raised bed plantings since the idea first was promoted by Organic Gardening magazine. It sure beats standing out in a field with a hoe in your hand!
The place where I’m living at this time has no soil, only rock and gravel, so all my plantings now are in containers. I have trees, flowers, herbs and vegetables all in different types and sizes of containers. My husband has built me some rustic and very handy wooden planter boxes for some of the vegetables requiring more space.
Our weather in this part of Texas is mild, with short, mild, wet winters, warm springs and very hot, dry summers. Even plants that say they like full sun don’t like Texas’ full sun! Tender plants and seedlings are placed in location where they get at least a half day of shade from buildings, and watering is required every day in the hot summer.
I have posted photos of some of my containers and gardens from the past.
