I think ‘Lavender Perfection’ is almost all the way open now. I’m really pleased that so far my dahlias seem healthier than they did last year. I hope this lasts.

04 Jul 2008Don't know how it is doing... Hosta 'Great Expectations' and Backyard gardenSunny 25°C / 77°F
About a month after I bought ‘Great Expectations’ I read that it tends to be a difficult hosta. I loved it so much when I saw it, I might have bought it anyway, even with that warning. I had read that it needs a good amount of sun, which is good, as where it is planted it does get a...

04 Jul 2008I've seen buds Zinnia 'Peppermint Stick' Budding and Backyard gardenI was looking at my zinnias and I can now see flower buds. I’m awaiting the zinnia blooms, as I had such a good time photographing them last year. I’m afraid I won’t have as long a season this year as I did last year, as I didn’t get them seeded in as soon this year. Th...Sunny 25°C / 77°F

I’m not sure about ‘Orange Marmalade’. It has lost some of the leaves it had when I first bought it, but it is also putting out new growth. I don’t know if it is in too much sun or not getting enough water or just settling in or what. I hope it will be okay.

This butterfly bush bloomed later than my other plant and it seemed later than all the other plants I’ve seen anywhere. Don’t know what caused the delay, but now it is here and it looks great. The flowers are a really dark purple, which is perfect against the variegated foliage.

04 Jul 2008not much purple Basil 'Purple Ruffles' and Herb gardenCloudy 26°C / 78°F
So far, ‘Purple Ruffles’ does not seem to come too true from seed for me, at least the seed I’ve gotten (Burpee). There seem to be a lot of solid color plants and not much ruffling. I think next year I will need to prick out all the non-purple seedlings and maybe resow a few t...

I got another decent harvest off my tomatoes this morning and left some that should be ready in another few days. Only one roma today, but I’m expecting more soon and then I can try to make sauce again. I got 2 very pink ‘German Pink’ today, along with 4 ‘Cherokee Purple...

03 Jul 2008died suddenly Pincushion Flower Dying and Perennial Bed gardenI noticed that this plant had not been looking well and was making sure that it got some extra water. At first I thought it might be going dormant, so I drove by where I knew there were some pincushion flowers. They were still in full bloom. My plant has up and died and I have no idea what hap...Sunny 31°C / 87°F

03 Jul 2008Being ignored Herb gardenI have seriously ignored the herb garden this spring/summer what with all my tomatoes and hydrangeas to worry about. I just realized that I never even wrote down when I sowed the sweet basil. It has been trying to flower, so I finally got around to cutting it off some and now I have enough basil...Overcast 31°C / 88°F
