Sunny 31°C / 87°FLast year, in what the hubby and I call “the beta test garden”, beans were one of our star performers. Despite the lack of space and less than ideal light conditions, we got a lot of really tasty green beans on the small handful of plants we grew. We learned a lot, most importantly ...

Sunny 30°C / 86°FSo, this ‘weed’ sprouted alongside one of my potted hot peppers this spring, and I was kind of enamored of its blue-green foliage, so I left it growing. The leaf shape is quite pretty. I’ve been surprised by its rapid growth – it’s nearly a foot high – and it...

Sunny 25°C / 77°FI think my favorite time of year is that span between when you’ve got everything in your spring garden in the ground and you’re waiting for things to really get going. It’s warmed up enough not to be chilly, but it’s not yet too hot to move. Sure, the mosquitoes are just...

Sunny 14°C / 57°FI’m pretty sure I planted this Salvia last spring. This wasn’t terribly successful last year, so imagine my surprise when it appeared alongside my potted Yuccas this spring! All total, about half a dozen plants grew, and they’re just now starting to bloom.

I was sitting in the garden today noticing how ‘gardeny’ my backyard smells. It’s really much nicer than smelling the dog poop odor wafting over the fence from the neighbors. Plus, all of the blooming things make everything really colorful! Also, they make my allergies go bonk...Sunny 29°C / 85°F -

The Sweet Candy-Lemon Smell of Success
Sometime about 8 years ago, my in-laws gave us a Lemon Verbena plant. I took it home and carefully followed their instructions, which as it turns out were kind of wrong. The plant remained scraggly and in Winter 2008, we finally lost it. Ever since, I’ve been looking for another. You mi...Sunny 27°C / 80°F -

Half. Price. Really. Enough said. I bought enough seeds today to sow another 40 acres. Which is going to be difficult, given that my entire property is probably less than 1000 square feet. Not that I won’t try.Sunny 22°C / 71°F -

Happy Earth Day! I celebrated by buying more dirt. Ok, I swear this is the last time. At least until next payday. So, Home Depot has seeds buy-one-get-one free (otherwise known as half-price). I realized this when I stopped in, thinking to buy some rabbit fence to repurpose as trellises. Tur...Cloudy 22°C / 71°F -

I’m sure that my garden area got full sun last summer. I have photos that show this to be true. And this year, I actually cut about half of the branches off of the only tree that brought partial/morning shade to my yard – because corn is clearly far more important than shade. So, a...Sunny 17°C / 62°F -

I just cannot be allowed to visit any store that sells seeds, plants and/or dirt unsupervised. Really. Someone help me! I went to Cornelius Nursery today. The old Voss location reopened recently – and it turns out I’ve been passing it pretty much every day and not noticing. Sigh....Sunny 17°C / 63°F
