    Notations for Next Year?

If next year exists … None of the red leaf, or at least more of the green butter lettuce. Swap round the bleeding heart and the brunneria.

Let it be spring! The week long wave of summer weather in March, has yielded to cool true spring days. Few blooms are out at the moment, but each holds the promise of bounty ahead. Photos of the ‘Seascape’ strawberry flowers, my latest phalaenopsis (beautiful mottled leaves), the stal...

    March 2012 Bloom Day

Well, I think the magnolia heard me thinking dark thoughts about it all winter long and made a stupendous effort to stay potential execution. It looks amazing this year with well over a dozen blooms. Last year it only provided one bloom and then moped around with rust fungus leaves all summer. It...

    February Bloom Day!

Crocus biflorus 'Purity' Blooming and Crocus flavus 'Golden Yellow' Blooming
Trying to remember that I’m more than just a medical student. These last few months have consumed my life, and the training will just continue to get more intense. However, for my February resolution (did New Year’s happen this year?), I’d like to try to balance things a little ...

Unknown Plant (with hopes for spring) ....

    Windowbox Display garden
Poking around the internet for inspiration, I stumbled across this rather fantastic windowbox idea. I think I can identify most of the plants in it, except for the purpley-green ones. At first I thought they might be some type of hebe, but they look much looser than that. Anyone have any ideas?

What Kind of Tree is This?

Received a photo of this tree as background in an advertising email from a gardening site back in spring; however, when I emailed them to ask what it was, I never received a response. Does anyone here have any idea what it is? Some type of cherry or quince?I’d love to consider planting som...

    June 2011 Bloom Day

    Hydrangea macrophylla 'Cityline Venice' Blooming
With the simplicity of mini plant-specific updates on the dashboard, any journal musings have been lost to the buzz and hum of summer. However, we’re grateful here to have suddenly cooler and drier days in the midst of what should normally be sweltering summer. So we’ll enjoy it whi...

Happy Bloom Day, everyone! In spite of full spring, most of my bloomers this month are inside. We’re past the spring ephemerals here and it’s still too early for summer flowers. This month I seem to be having luck with orchids! The new dendrobium spikes are in full bloom, my dear o...

Garbage Surprise and Mistreated Plants of the Region

Prunus kwanzan Flowering and Iris reticulata Blooming
So, when my Ebay-special iris bulbs that I had carefully chilled for 8 weeks (supposed to be 14) started sprouting too vigorously to keep in the back of the fridge I set them out on the porch. They then appeared to sulk, and put forth a bit more green growth and then stalled. So, a week ago, I ...
