My garden in Sequim, started about 4.5 years ago. We have an acre lot on a down-facing slope, which is a wooded area filled with natives like;Douglas & Grand firs, cedars,Ash, Alders, maples, and Madrone trees. After all the excavating for the house, the land had been beaten up and many trees removed. My long term plan for our property was to restore the outer most areas to a more native look again. The challenge was working with the many levels that resulted from the placement of the house on the land. I had no idea this was going to be so challenging for gardening. Many retaining walls were built, for holding the land and consequently became areas for individual gardens. I had never designed a garden from the ground up on raw land. The real challenge and it remains to be to this day however, is the clay soil! How could that be, here on a beautiful hill in the Olympic Mt.range, clay? What? This was what I had at my home back in California!
Well, almost five years later, the understory plant life is returning under the large Douglas firs; salal, Salmonberry, Oceanspray, wild blackberry, swamp rose, Oregon grape, Flowering Currant, strawberries, lady fern, sword fern, hardy geranium,(practically a weed, and of course the grasses, dandelions and thistles.I am thrilled to see them flourish as they continue to take back what was once theirs.
TO be continued.
