I am a haphazard gardener who flies by the seat of her pants with the help of a haphazard husband willing to dig, transplant or create more haphazard gardens for me.
Together we have haphazardly created some pretty flowers, uncovered and developed an 80-100 year old rock garden on vacant adjacent cp train property, created gardens all around our house and so far we have ten years in on this property. Our plants have come from horticultural plant sales, other local plant sales, trading with girls at work, friends, parents and other family members gardens, strangers have stopped on road at my house and wanted some of my flowers in trade for some of theirs, etc. Of course I have also purchased a few perennials from our local garden shops and many annuals.
I try things out, if they do well I move them around, if I see holes or need more colour in a certain area I move things around, I split plants when they overgrow, pull obvious large weeds when I have the time and make many mistakes. For example I have sometimes planted very invasive plants where I only had a small space or I have planted sun plants in the shade and vice versa but I am learning. I don’t always retain what I learn and therefor repeat mistakes but the best part is no one cares. There is no test or exam and its my garden so I’ll plant what I want to. Sometimes I worry I am creating a nightmare for the next generation or homeowner to look after
as I explained about the invasive overbearing stuff, sometimes gets out of control. If I have money and my way I would completely landscape and redo the gardens reusing my plants, well I would have a landscaping company do the hard part.
