    September Bloom Day!

Cardinal Feather Blooming, Mealy Blue Sage Blooming, Zexmenia Blooming, Prairie Tea Blooming, and Broom Sna...
Finding anything blooming today was like a treasure hunt. But I found some things, mostly in the unbearable heat of the driveway rock garden. 1. All dressed up and no place to go: a male Cardinal Feather which normally blooms in April. Sadly, none of its female counterparts were in bloom. (They h...

Where am I, and why am I in this handbasket?

Here we go again—this evening there’s a fire about 40 miles to the west of us, and a couple of small ones about 50 miles to the south. I’m so exhausted, but maybe tomorrow I should review and practice evacuation plans. The fire in my hometown is 85% contained. I finally received...

Carolina Snailseed, fires, and introducing Barton Brabanter

Chicken Coop Two garden , Chicken Coop One garden , Carolina Snailseed Fruiting, and Creek garden
Thanks for everyone’s concerns about the Texas wildfires. As you recall, we were surrounded by them in April and May. The Bastrop fire is about 4 hours east of us. It has decimated one of my favorite state parks. Also 18,000 acres of my hometown are burning, the flames now only a mile from ...

    Surprises big and small

Chicken Coop One garden , Red Bird of Paradise Blooming, and Entrance garden
The past few days the temperature has dropped from 106-109 degrees to 99-101 giving a little relief. It’s pretty sad when 100 degrees feels like fall. Last Sunday a small, dark cloud moved over us. I had an idea. You call yourself a cloud? I bet you are too wimpy to even wet the ground! Far...

    August Bloom Day!

Esperanza Blooming, Navajo Tea Blooming, Drummond's Clematis Blooming, Antelope Horns Blooming, and Crepe M...
We had an unexpected inch of rain on Friday, and suddenly many flowers have pushed forth blooms. I guess they figured it was now or never. 1. This is only the second time the Dwarf Crape Myrtle that came with the house has bloomed in a decade. I think the lack of leaves on the drought stricken tr...

Cleaning out the well and Elvis is daddy

    Chicken Coop Two garden
Pretty much everything we planted in our decade here is dead, and then some. The trees look a lot worse than when I left on my trip. One of our largest Mulberry trees has cracked down the middle and has sprouted leaves on its trunk. I am amazed by the tenacity of all living things trying to hang ...

Selective breeding believed to be causing fruits and veggies to be less nutritional

Check out this brief article with an interactive infographic. If you click on the individual nutrients it will show you how much has been lost since 1950. The study doesn’t touch on soil depletion and reliance on chemical fertilizers which I feel are also at fault. http://www.grist.org/food...

Farewell waterfalls, back to the inferno

After a couple of vet recommended baking soda drenches Finley is all better now—thank you for sending him healing thoughts! Three new peeps have hatched. Unfortunately, the man who was supposed to come and clean out our well over the weekend didn’t show up. Farmer Rick went to his pla...

    Notes from cabin and farm

There’s the sweet sound of a downpour outside in this temperate rainforest cabin where I’m staying. I am experiencing rain every day and it feels great! I even got to operate my new umbrella—it’s been so long I almost needed a user’s manual. I’m enjoying the gr...

Chasing rain: a postcard from the road

I’ve seen it every day since I hit the road. This was a particularly beautiful rain storm I saw in New Orleans early this morning. I had to buy an umbrella, because it didn’t occur to me to pack one. Hope all is well in Folia Land. I’ll catch up with you soon!
