    Crops I dream about...

Now we’re more than halfway through winter, I’m starting to think about what to put on my “must grow” list for spring. Aside from the normal cucumbers, melons & tomatoes, are some crops I haven’t tried before like Guinea bean, jicama, and chia. I also have crops ...

    Shock horror...back to gardening again?!

It’s been…quick count…nearly a year since I was here last. I can’t believe it’s been that long! Things have changed…evolved…moved on…& some are still blissfully the same. The weather has been pretty crap (not to mention pretty cold!) all winter....

    Squirmy

I so wish I could take a photo for you tonight but, alas, it’s too dark. What’s the easiest way to kill snails? Go out after a massive rainfall & pick them off the wall. I went out this evening to close up the coop & move some plants under cover. What greeted us as we turned o...

    sad farewell

    Poultry garden
Tonight, my little fluffy companion Rosalind died. I came home from picking my son up from kindergarten to be greeted by my very distraught 15 year old. Apparently she had only just found her – she’d gone out to get the washing in for me & checked on the chooks…Rosalind was ...

    I yam what I yam

    Oca (NZ Yam) Harvesting
It’s oca harvesting time! Or yams for those of you from New Zealand ;) They are not true yams, of course. Kiwis seem to be very fond of calling things by different, confusing names. Chilean guava is another example – in NZ, they’re often sold as cranberries but, of course, are n...

    What rot

    Medlar 'Dutch' Harvesting
Alys Fowler understands that shopkeepers are not keen to stock a fruit that would require a ‘leave to rot’ tag while on display. No! Really?! Well…when you put it like that… I have a little medlar tree in a quiet corner of the garden. It stands guard over a pet chook we lo...

    Garden Companions...creepy crawly edition...

We’ve been having a very cold spell recently. As in almost freezing. And it’s not winter yet. Whilst some of my plants are confused (like the tall bearded iris that decided to flower last week & is putting up more flower spikes), most have died down for the upcoming winter. But th...

    Tasty, tasty tamarillos

The kids were all either at various educational institutions or asleep in bed with a raging cough, so I took the opportunity to tuck in to the first of the tamarillos I’d harvested & had tucked safely out of little hands’ reach on the bench. Oh…how I have missed tamarillos! ...

    Small & delightful

    Oca (NZ Yam) Flowering
This rather nondescript flower is cause for excitement for me. It is oca or NZ yam. And it’s the first time I’ve seen one in flower. This is not to say that they don’t flower very often because they do. It’s just the first time one of mine has flowered. Mind you, this is o...

    Return of the prodigal child...

Folia has probably given me up for dead. Sporadic updates, rants about my chooks, & other boring stuff no one probably wanted to read…this last year has been my (albeit tamer) version of the Queen’s annus horribilis. The last 12 months have been stupidly stressful. Especially sinc...
