After having primarily ornamental backyards in our previous houses, I made the decision to make my next garden more productive. I like the idea of being self-sufficient…but we don’t live on a farm & gone are the days of backyards big enough for a veritable orchard. But when we built our new house, I was determined to have an edible garden. Not only can they be just as pretty as ornamentals but we have small kids & I want to teach them the joy of gardening (& what better…& safer way than letting them grow some tasty veges!). Besides, there is something very satisfying about feeding your family with the fruits of your labour.

It started with a small flock of chooks. They make great pets, keep the insect population at bay & provide us with eggs far superior to anything in the shops. Then it progressed to the front yard, where everything except my small collection of irises is edible. Even the nature strip is going to be (eventually) converted into a smorgasbord of native edible fruit.

Now the pathways & borders of my backyard have (finally) been completed & I am now on to the fun part – planting out the garden. Eventually it will be 100% edible. I want to keep track of my progress (which is why I started this journal!).

Wish me luck!
