    Neglected - Bad Garden Parent

    Front Yard Hill garden
If it’s not 98*F it is storming. Between that, I am working and when I get home I just want to rest or spend time with family. On top of that, we’re both new at gardening. Our front yard garden has been severely neglected. Not only do we have weeds and grass growing, but I realized th...

    Compost Pickup

    Front Patio Vegetable garden
Well, today I finally was able to pick up a load of compost. Though you would think that it was a simple task, think again! I do not have a pickup truck, so I had to borrow a trailer. No big deal. I drive to the compost compound and wait. Last week I was told to come around 11:00 so they could lo...

    Raised Bed Progress

    Front Patio Vegetable garden
My goal for this weekend was to finish building the 5 raised beds for the front patio. Since the temperature has been steady around 95*F every day, working outside or in the garage can be torture. I was able to completely finish 3 out of the 5 beds. Wood has been cut, pieces put together, stained...

Too Late to Sow or Transplant?

Onion 'Walla Walla Sweet' and Front Patio Vegetable garden
I am almost done putting together my raised vegetable beds for the front patio. They will all be done by 6/5/2011 and ready for soil (compost) either Monday or Tuesday. I live in Alabama where it is now 90*F. Is it too late to sow the following seeds: Carrot ‘Sweet Treat Hybrid’ Cucum...

    Creating Raised Beds

    Front Patio Vegetable garden
I finally made the trip to The Home Depot to get all the supplies needed to build our raised vegetable beds for the front patio. The plan is to build 5 separate beds that are 48" long x 18" wide and 12" deep. I will staple landscaping fabric to the bottom to ensure weeds do not gro...

Indoor Sowing: Walla Walla Sweet Onions

    Onion 'Walla Walla Sweet'
According to the MyFolia.com wiki, the minimum germination temperature is 55*F and the maximum is 95*F. Does this mean that if my indoor sow is located in my garage and the outside temperature never drops below 65*F at night and the maximum daytime temperature is around 90*F, do I need a heat lam...

    Busy Day Transplanting and Sowing

Today my wife and I transplanted 4 of our tomatoes from the temporary garden to a upsy downy hanging tomato garden. Plants 1 and 2 are planted on top and 3 and 4 are planted on the bottom. We also sowed a package of onions into 50 separate peat containers and left the containers inside the garage.
