    Desperately need rain

3 The Orchard garden and 4 No RaBBITs Allowed! Backyard garden
Only 1 day of rain in over two months. Irrigation is keeping the main veg beds healthy, but I have nothing set up for the orchard except the rain barrels. No rain, no working rain barrels. Strawberry harvest is done, much smaller berries and yield than last year and I’m sure that has a lot ...

4 No RaBBITs Allowed! Backyard garden
6 more lbs strawberries today. This year we are hulking and freezing all until end of harvest when jams will be processed at one time. Did I mention we have not purchased commercial jam in at least two years, maybe three? We are jam self-sufficient! Strawberries are small this year. Lesson learne...

peas: burpeeana Harvesting, Potato Flowering, and Kale: Dwarf Siberian Harvesting
Harvested 16 lbs. of kale and the first batch of shell peas today. I really need to get the clover cut back, it is heavily shading the broccoli. My helpers are gone for a few days and it’s difficult to get sustained work done in the gardens with my little guys constantly interrupting. Still...

    Dry spring

3 The Orchard garden and 4 No RaBBITs Allowed! Backyard garden
Still no rain here. At least half of the hot and paprika peppers I transplanted last week are in severe shock. I need to remember to turn their drips on every single day while this weather continues. In addition to lack of ground moisture, it’s been extremely windy this spring. The hot, dry...

    Weed identification wanted

Anybody able to identify this from the foliage? At first I thought it might be rudbeckia, but the leaves are not like my other black-eyed susan plants. I’m letting it grow out for now because I want to identify it, I figure I can cut it out before it goes to seed if it’s really evil.

A warning on bean weevils (aka lessons hard learned)

Earlier this year I discovered part of my bean stash was completed destroyed by bean weevils. Undetected overwinter, they’d multipled and devoured nearly my entire bean seed stash intended for sale. Luckily, or so I thought, I had two reserves. My personal seed stock was in the fridge overw...

sMy strawberries have baby fruits, as do the cherries, plums and apples. The currants look like they’ll ripen before the strawberries. There’s spot on my plums, likely cedar rust. Oddly enough, the apples look mostly awesome but I already see a few infected leaves. I’m starting ...
