Blooming and explosive growth Sugar Pumpkin Flowering and Vegetable garden
I swear they doubled in size over a three day weekend away from the garden. We got good rain while we were gone, and now lots of sun, so they’ve gotten enormous. One is starting to climb a rose bush (which can handle it, so I’ll let it), another started working on my tomato cages and ...

Party salad Sassy Salad Mix Harvesting and Vegetable garden
Harvested the last to take to a party. Ended up with 2 gallon bags full. Left a few of the rainbow chard sprouts in the ground, they’re just barely coming on now, and hopefully they’ll have time to get more hearty. Will probably plant another batch from seed in a couple weeks.

Thinned - fritatta Lacinato Kale Harvesting and Vegetable garden
Plants are about 12-14 inches tall now. I thinned them out and used the thinnings in a fritatta with bacon and carrots. Probably one more thinning in a couple weeks before I just start letting them mature and harvesting the leaves only.

Flowering for the first time Goat's Beard Flowering and Under the trees garden
Guess getting more light was the key. It’s about twice the size it’s ever been and has two very elegant flower spikes. Will post a photo soon, as soon as it’s really at its peak.

Mulch! Backyard garden , Frontyard garden , The side yard garden , and Bees & Bugs garden
After last winter’s heavy snow, and losing a few plants to it, I decided it was well time to give all the beds a fat layer of mulch. And since we were taking the bamboo we’ve been thinning to the mulch place, I picked up a truck load of high-quality hemlock bark mulch while we were th...

Big salad for dinner Sassy Salad Mix Harvesting and Vegetable garden
Planting needed some thinning, and we’d had some good rain so it was all nice and plump and juicy. Yum!

Planted out - batch 1 San Marzano Tomato Planting Out and Vegetable garden
Planted out the first set of sprouts. Most in one of the new beds, but had some left over that I put in between the rows of onions. I know, I’m probably overcrowding. Batch 2 back in the window to get a little beefier before I figure out what to do with them. Probably give them away to frie...

Screened frames for new beds Vegetable garden
Built two 10-inch high frames with removable lids for the new 3×3 raised beds. Used nylon bird netting mesh stapled to the frame to keep the pests out (cats, mostly). Will wrap them in row cover cloth in the early spring next year to turn them into cold frames.

planting out batch #2 Nickel "Haricots Verts" and Vegetable garden
Neighbor’s cat decided to take a nap on batch 1 before we had a chance to get the screens up on the new cold frames. Killed about half of the first batch. Planted out batch 2 in place of the ones that didn’t make it.
