04 Oct 2009Transplanted some sprouts Lacinato Kale Transplanted and Vegetable gardenI had sprinkled a few seeds in the big bed when I planted my fall salad crop and they’ve been coming up slowly. Transplanted a few of them into the small bed with with carrots and put the row cover cloth up on the frame, so I’m hoping they’ll take off a bit more with some warmth...17°C / 62°F

04 Oct 2009Mildew and vines dying Sugar Pumpkin Dying and Vegetable gardenThe leaves are looking very sad, and most of the vines have stopped growing. I’ve got a few plump fruits that are still very green, hoping that the warm spell we’re supposed to get next week will help ripen them. Have harvested one nice little pumpkin that did ripen.17°C / 62°F

04 Oct 2009Coming back up 1 Garlic 'Spanish Roja' Sprouting and Vegetable gardenNice thing about bulbing plants, if they don’t do so hot one year, they’ll probably come up again. So when I was replanting some salad I pulled out the sad little corms from the spring, and now they’re sprouting up nicely. Hoping they’ll overwinter and I’ll actually ...17°C / 62°F

15 Sep 2009Removed dead rhodie Frontyard gardenThe poor thing never did well, and this summer’s heat did it in. When I dug it out, the roots were all bound up, I don’t think there was any soil at all in the root ball. Either some really bad landscapers did the planting, or the last owner had no idea. I suspect the former. Most of ...25°C / 77°F

25 Aug 2009Spring bulbs 1 Bees & Bugs gardenPlanted some of the bulbs I dug up from excavations in the front border. I’m not really sure what they are, so I’m not going to “propagate” until I see what comes up in the spring. Should be Narcissus “jetfire” and muscari. I think.Overcast 19°C / 66°F

22 Aug 2009Planted Heuchera Frosted Violet Planting Out and Frontyard gardenFinally decided to plant this Heuchera next to my existing one. But that meant digging out a bunch of columbines and daylilies from that corner of the border. No big loss. Now maybe my campanula will actually thrive now that it doesn’t have so much competition. Also ended up digging up a bu...22°C / 72°F

15 Aug 2009Last batch for fall Sassy Salad Mix Sown and Vegetable garden18°C / 65°F
Hopefully the mini-heatwave we’ll be getting this week will be just the thing to get them going for a good fall crop. I’ve never planted for a fall crop before, so I’m kind of guessing. Used the last of my packet from this mix. Probably won’t get this mix again, the mustar...
