The Red Robin tomatoes are harvesting one or two at a time, and the Minibelle tomatoes are setting fruit. The strawberries come in flushes, then there’s a gap before the next lot come. The zucchini are flowering like mad -both male and female, but don’t seem to set. Last year was a ve...Balmy 29°C / 84°F -

I think my capsicum seeds are duds
Strawberry 'Sweetie" Flowering, Swede 'Purple Champion' Harvesting, Zucchini 'Yellow and Green' , and Peppe...because I’m STILL waiting for them to sprout. I think I’m going to have to buy in a punnet of seedlings again this year. Shame, because these seeds are a mini variety of capsicum that would have been especially suitable for patio gardening. However, regular capsicums do seem to do wel...Partly Sunny 15°C / 59°F -

Spring planting is well underway now. Tomatoes are shooting and the strawberries are settled in, flowering and setting fruit like mad, but the capsicums I’m still waiting for the capsicum to shoot and they’re about 3 weeks slower than estimated date. I hope they DO poke their noses up... -

Radishes Take #3...Spring planning.
Hope over experience…I’m trying another crop of Radishes. The soil has been fertilised with Yates Dynamic Lifter for Root Vegetables, and has been left fallow for about a month. The Elephant garlic is doing really well, it’s already bulbing up nicely. The carrots have done littl...Overcast 12°C / 54°F -

with no bulbing. Again. When I pulled them, only two had made a pathetically half-hearted attempt to thicken the root. I ate the leaves as a salad vegetable. May as well get something for the room they’ve taken up. On the bright side, that was two more than last time.Cloudy 13°C / 55°F -

Not much movement 'round these parts
Apartment Patio Sq Ft gardenEveything is fine…healthy, content seeming, but not really doing much, except the radishes. No hurry, it’s a slow time of year. They can just sit there until it starts to warm up and away they’ll go. It’s been comparatively warm, so perhaps things might start to grow soon....Rainy 11°C / 52°F -

The attack of the BROWN THUMB.
Apartment Patio Sq Ft gardenOk, well, two perpetual silverbeet sprouted (out of 12), then died. Not even sowing more than I needed saved me from that particular failure. I bought a punnet of 4 perpetual spinach seedlings to replace them, and have planted those into a square foot. It was actually a punnet of 6, as punnets ge...Cloudy 12°C / 54°F -

Beetroot out. Strawberries -bare rooted or in pots?
Apartment Patio Sq Ft gardenI think the thyme and oregano are dying/have died, but the rosemary is looking good. Rosemary seems to be pretty bulletproof in general. The beetroot is now planted out in it’s own square. I plan to grow them to a small size, golf ball, maybe a little bigger. I don’t want big ones bec...Storms 18°C / 64°F -

My first bed is set up, gridded and has radishes in one section and elephant garlic in another. Last year’s radishes(Sparkler) were very…healthy. From the ground up. Masses and masses of foliage, but nothing plumped underneath. This year I’m trying a different variety, French Br...Sunny 16°C / 61°F -

What fun I’ve been having! Lugging two 40 litre bags of soil up 2 flights of stairs. I don’t know how much each would weigh, but I’m guessing roughly 1 litre soil=1 kg/2lb. Probably not much less than me. Amazing what we can manage when there’s no choice. Either I got them...Sunny 13°C / 55°F
