Harvested the pumpkins; cleared out the vines
Raised Bed 2012 garden , Small Sugar Pumpkin , and Long Island Cheese PumpkinCloudy 13°C / 55°FWell, it wasn’t the greatest pumpkin year ever, but at least we got a few: 2 Long Island cheese pumpkins, and 2 more sugar pumpkins. The rope netting & hammock for the larger L.I. cheese pumpkin was a great success: it’s fairly large for a trellis, and ended up about 8 pounds. We ...

Note to self: if you trellis pumpkins, don't forget the safety harnesses.
Raised Bed 2012 garden and Long Island Cheese PumpkinWell, it should confuse the deer for a few moments. I have to remind myself to look around for something suitable for next year, or go back to growing them on the earth. This whole business is becoming fraught with tension, no pun intended.

Rainy 29°C / 84°F(*&^#$@ deer Most of my delicious black cherry tomatoes are gone & the bulk of the heirloom tomatoes are also wiped out – a deer (most likely suspect) clearly jumped the fence and browsed to her heart’s content. As a result, there will probably be no more tomatoes. In other ne...

This thing is a monster. It’s the result of a seed swap planting, so it may be something else entirely (I think this is the case), but if it’s a delicata, it’s not very delicate.

Storms 33°C / 91°FAs many of you smart Folians mentioned in my previous pumpkin post, the extreme heat may have suppressed pollination activity in my garden. You were right! We’re starting to see development of pumpkins & other squashes now. It’s not a heavy set of fruit, but it looks like we’...

Sunny 33°C / 91°FWell. Things don’t normally work out in such a linear fashion, but this time they did: Back in the spring, I wasn’t able to discourage a yellowjacket queen from making the hugelkultur mound her home. At first, I was really focused on a safe way of destroying the nest. But the more I r...

I’ve got three beds of pumpkins going, with 2 actual recognizable pumpkins. I think the pollinators aren’t bothering with the flowers, or the fruits are all rotting away very early (I’ve seen a few of those). It’s a rough growing year, so I’m mostly just rolling with...Storms 31°C / 88°F -

(Well, it was some time ago, but I hadn’t documented previously.) I bought some Jerusalem Artichoke seeds from a seller who didn’t really have good seed-identification (or possibly seed cataloging) skills. Luckily, they were very very inexpensive. I had my doubts within a week of spro...Cloudy 33°C / 91°F -

Overcast 32°C / 90°FWell, I decided to just do it – leave the hugelkultur mound to its own devices & not ask anyone to water while I was gone. I also didn’t water before I left. The tomatoes are doing very, very well. The fruit is still on, and looks very healthy. The leaves have only the slightest b...

Storms 22°C / 72°FBecause I wasn’t commuting, I was able to take a couple of minutes to admire the garden on a rainy Tuesday morning & pick some lettuces from the hugelkultur and strawberries from the raised beds. I stopped to marvel at the horrible destruction that the cabbageworms are wreaking on the c...
