Attack of the gribblies on my violets.

I’ve had a run in with mites before and used some pretty hefty chemicals to shift them. I really didn’t like doing that – not only is it a serious health hazard, but the kinda stuff which you need versus mites is heavily toxic if it gets into the water. Using it involves eye a...

Chives - Can I give 'em a severe haircut?

    Chives
The recent winds knocked all my chives for six – would it be ok for them to get a very severe chop this late on the year or would it be too much for them? I figured I could make chive soup and make that patch a little bit neater =)

    'Way Back There'

    Way Back There garden
Way back there, at the end of the garden is a ‘flower bed’. Until a few weeks ago this flower bed was covered in slate stones over weed suppressing plastic – it looked pretty, sure, but it seemed such a waste to not use all of that space! My aim is to turn this particular are...

Gladioli Troubles - Virus or Underwatering?

    Gladioli 'Espresso' Damaged
One of my favourite outdoor flowers is gladioli but this current batch seems to have some problems and I’m not sure whether its a virus issue (not uncommon in gladis) or whether me being unable to water them for a fortnight earlier in their development has scarred them, or they’re suf...

I have quite a few things blooming at the moment but the petunia black velvet is one of the more spectacular looking ones. They’re supposed to be completely black, but the yellow stripes are something which I’ve read can be caused by cultural conditions changing and, given how the wea...

A ‘state of the garden’ snapshot. Decided to try and do a once over of everything at least once a month in the garden – I often miss something and wanted to make sure I had at least some notes on those things which end up stuck in corners =) 1. Veggie, container and coldframe g...

    Dwarf Lupins

    Dwarf Lupins Blooming
It’s early, but the dwarf lupins are already giving me flowers – though I’m sure they’re going top lose their ‘dwarf’ credentials this year as they’re growing rather large… Last year the first one was a pink, this year purple seems to be the leader =)

    Bloom Day

African Violet - Ballet Snowcone Blooming
This month I definitely have something pretty blooming for bloom day – one of my new little african violets is quite happily blooming its head off – and has plenty more buds to open! It was one from a group of five I got as a set and whilst I mainly wanted other plants from the group...

    Insert Expletive Here

    Coldframe garden
Cross-posted from my blog. I had just planted a huge bunch of things on Monday, many of my seedlings were finally coming up and… SPLAT. Potatoes are not enough ballast for a mini-greenhouse it seems. Cue me rooting around in the rain, trying to rescue anything small and green that I could...
