Quick Weed and Plant Between Storms

    Lake Anne Plot 47A garden
After last nights thunderstorm and before the one slated for this afternoon I managed to swing by the plot to keep up with the weeding, pull up volunteer potatos, remove the old onions now that the new ones are established and plant corn, peas, beans and some flowers. Hopefully the rain is not to...

Finally got back to the garden plot after all the snow, frost, rain and generally un-spring like weather we’ve had on all my free days the last few weeks. It had rained the night before, was still quite cool and some of the standing water in buckets and divets was frozen but the ground was ...

    Digging After the Rain

Kale and Lake Anne Plot 47A garden
The morning started out with some decent rain but with warmer temps and a bit of wind it blew out by mid morning and the sun even came out for a while. I took the opportunity to remove the undecomposed woody stems and straw from old compost pile so that I could smother the weeds that were overtak...

    Start of a New Year

    Lake Anne Plot 47A garden
Took my 1st trip out to the plot at the community garden today. Last week we had our first real snow drop of the new year and it was 4 inches of very wet stuff. Since then it’s been clear skys and slightly warmer temps so it’s all but gone except in the very shady spots, giving the gr...

Did more weeding, and mulched Box F. Planted overwinter onions in Box F. Pulled out last of the beans. Tomatoe still has some green and green/red tomatos that I’m hoping to let grow out till the just before the first frost, keeping an eye on the temps daily now. Pulled a few carrots, they a...

    Planning and Prepping for Winter

July brought more weeds and less time so by the end I had to get radical and do a full clean out. The plot is back in managable shape so today I focused on pulling the obvious weed starts, began a new compost pile in the worst bed and continued to double dig and de-root/rock box B. Putting down l...

    Attack of the Weeds

Cabbage, Cover De Boeuf Des Vertus Sprouting, Asparagus Dying, and Rhubarb Dying
After life got in the way of gardening time for almost a month, I got back in there to find the celery root shooting to the sky, the mint and morning glories taking over the front of the plot and a voluteer pumpking crowding out almost everything else. 2 trips and 4 hours later I got most of the ...

    Garden-Week 2

    Potatos Planting Out
Since the potatoes arrived and the weather was so nice I got to the garden and began to turn the potato patch. Deciced to take 6 foot bed and put the potatoes in a trough along the front and build a ridge in the middle. I plan to pull the dirt from the back to make the hills and in the summer use...

1st day at garden in 2012

Went to see how things kept overwinter and was pleasantly supprised. Oh boy did we get a good run on carrots and the kale look great too. Ripped out the beets cause they never really took, though the greens would have been good if the warm weather hadn’t caused the bugs to get them first.
