Status of overwintered dahlia tubers
Dahlia 'Mascot Maya' SownCloudy 9°C / 48°FI didn’t check my tubers as vigorously as I should have over the winter. Loss appears to be about 15%, which isn’t much worse than previous years considering that my climate control options are more limited now than they were in the past. This year, I used two different packing media:...

Cloudy 9°C / 48°FUsually I just plant my tubers directly in the ground, but I’d seen some pictures of tubers being started in this manner and was curious to give it a shot. Luckily, one of the nurseries I purchased from this year provided instructions! Each tray houses about twelve tubers. I’m startin...

Cloudy 8°C / 46°FI bought over twenty-five new dahlias. This means, basically, that there will be no room in my garden for vegetables this year. My largest order was from Corralitos Gardens. They super-fun to order from. Instead of shipping tubers, they ship little plugs with live plants. Sometimes you can even s...

Cloudy 15°C / 59°FThe lemon verbena was pretty much taken out by frost, but I had harvested most of the plant a few days earlier and made lemon verbena syrup. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been having a little as a sweetener in tea, or in sparkling wine. Today I went out to check on things in the backya...

8°C / 46°FI got through nineteen (of twenty-nine) bags of tubers today. Some of the divisions may not make it, but here’s what today’s work yielded: 1 – Colwood Crush (did not divide) 3 – Mascot Maya (West Bed) 1 – Spartacus (West Bed) 2 – Crossfield Ebony (West Bed, one...

Overcast 7°C / 45°FThe season’s winding down, and as usual, some of the beets have formed nice roots and others… have not. I harvested the nice ones and left the others in the ground. At this point, I don’t think they’ll do much more growing but one can always hope.

Sunny 9°C / 48°FDug out twenty-nine clumps today. They are stored in plastic garbage bags until tomorrow, when I will divide them. I don’t think I’ve ever had this many tubers in one year before, and am feeling worried that I won’t get them done before they start to shrivel!

Sunny 17°C / 62°FThe first harvest was marred by a violent heatwave followed by drenching rain— several varieties cracked. Subsequent harvests have been better, although late blight has taken its toll.
