07 Feb 2008Scrumptious Kamokamo (Maori Squash) and 'round the back garden
I’ve eaten one kamokamo now. I picked it at the size of a large fist, quartered it, and steamed it for about ten minutes or so, then shared it in a meal with the neighbour who gave me the plant in the first place. Kamokamo are delicious! I have two more on their way. I’ve found that t...

03 Feb 2008What variety are these? 1 Beans and 'round the back garden
I’m picking beans regularly now. A few people have asked me what kind they are and I honestly cannot remember the name. It starts with ‘B’ I think and they are an old ‘heritage’ variety. They are a yellow/green when growing, bright pink (as pictured) when mature, an...

07 Jan 2008Abundance Raspberries and 'round the back gardenSince the last post about my rasberries I’ve picked another 400g, which I added to the 400g I already had and made into a batch of jam. 31 Dec 2007Ready for picking (I think) Blackcurrants and 'round the back garden
The bird netting is working superbly protecting my blackcurrant crop. Looks like I’m going to have plenty for jam. I just looked up the recipe and it seem blackcurrant jam is one of the easier jams to make.
3lbs. Blackcurrants
4lbs. Sugar
1 pint water
Just boil the sugar and water for 6 min...

31 Dec 2007Birds-0 Me-1 Raspberries and 'round the back garden
My first attempt at protecting my raspberry crop from the birds was a failure. The silver-eyes (or wax-eyes as they are also known) got in and feasted. So I had a second attempt and made a better job of it. I put up bamboo framing, tied together with strawbale twine, and hang the bird netting ove...

24 Dec 2007Time to begin picking Zucchini and The River Garden (front yard) garden
Just ten days after the first flowers appeared, the first of the courgettes are ready for picking. I’ll let one go and see how big I can grow it, just for fun and for next years seeds.
