I’ve been gardening on a very limited scale for about 10 years. What started out as a few tomatoes, basils and eggplants on the roof of a garage in FL started mutated into a few small raised beds in Boston, then slightly larger beds at rentals in Portalnd, OR.
Recently, my fiancee and I bought our little 50s ranch which just happened to have a south-east facing back yard. It also had a scrabbly old pear tree that produced a bountiful crop of mushy, half-rotten pears and far too much shade for my machinations. Sadly the old pear tree succumbed to the whirring teeth of a chainsaw last summer, opening the entire yard to full sun.
After several aborted attempts, mostly due to unseasonably cold weather this spring, I now have one 6×12′ bed and two 6×6′ raised beds. Now I’m just testing to see what works and what doesn’t. Oh, and a fence is going up tout-suite to keep Turk and his pals Marley (the veggie bed pooper), Lucy and Monty from inciting my wrath.
