I’ve been gardening my whole life; it’s a life long love. The first garden I planted was when I was 8, and have grown flowers or vegetables of some kind every year since, no matter whether I was renting or in my own home. Gardens are not just for ourselves—they’re for everyone who enjoys looking at them, or savoring the fruits of your edible garden.
My husband is a great help with planting shrubs & flowers, and building arbours and trellises, and although he’s not keen on the veggie garden, having beets, carrots, and fresh salad all last summer was appealing to him. We now not only have perennial gardens (shrubs and herbaceous with emphasis on bird & butterfly friendly), but three raised beds (one outfitted with a hoop greenhouse), containers for greens & herbs on the deck, berry, grape, rhubarb, and apple. I’d have chickens if local bylaws allowed—us hen lovers are working on that!
I have one daughter married, and a super little granddaughter who’s 3; hope to turn her into a mini-gardener!
