    So hot

    Tiny Farm garden
It’s been brutally hot here the last few days. The temperature has been over 100 (F) for the last two days, and will be again today. It’s also been very humid, over 80%. I’ve lived where it gets hot and dry (in Arizona) and where it gets hot and humid (Washington DC suburbs) ...

    Lunch!

Genovese Basil Harvesting and Tiny Farm garden
I just cut one of my two Genovese stems. I read somewhere that one of the mistakes new gardeners make with basil is to wait until they need it to harvest it. This causes the plant to get overgrown and bitter. Instead, you should harvest it when it is ready, when the stems are about 8 inches ta...

    Lucky day!

Red Swiss Chard Planting Out and Tiny Farm garden
Two of my swiss chard plants (one Oriole and one Vulcan) failed to germinate. So when I saw some small transplants of red ruffled Swiss Chard at my church’s yard sale for $1.50, I scooped them up. I planted two of them to replace my failed chard. I’ll hang on to the others until I ...

    Small, tiny, white

French Breakfast Radish Harvesting and Tiny Farm garden
I just harvested my first tiny radish. It was a French Breakfast radish, and it was almost entirely white, with just a bit of red at the tip. I was anxious to eat one before our current heat wave hit, so I pulled just one. This is my first harvest from my new garden, and I couldn’t be ha...

    Yawn

Cherry Belle Radish and Tiny Farm garden
I’m having a hard time bringing myself to write about radishes. I love them, and I’m looking forward to eating them — but they just aren’t that interesting! They are doing very well. I’m thinking they will be ready in 3-5 days.

    One is the lonliest number

Bull's Blood Beets Showing True Leaves and Tiny Farm garden
The one seed that sprouted from my original sowing is doing well.

    Just one

Purple Kohlrabi Showing True Leaves and Tiny Farm garden
One of these did come up, but the other did not. It doesn’t seem fair to call this a 50% germination rate, because it’s based on such a small sample! But the one that emerged is doing very well.

    Clusters

New Zealand Spinach and Tiny Farm garden
I didn’t realize the seeds for this plant were clusters, but they must be because two of them have sprouted, and I only planted one seed.

    True Leaves

Vulcan Swiss Chard Showing True Leaves and Tiny Farm garden
Only one of the two Vulcan chard seeds I planted grew. This one is doing fine so far, but I will have to replant the other one.

    Standing Up

Wax Brittle Beans Showing True Leaves and Tiny Farm garden
These have germinated much faster than my blue lake bush beans — I’m probably going to have to replant those.

    Sturdy

Debaro Plum Tomato and Tiny Farm garden
This tomato is interesting. The plant is very strong and sturdy. It has a much thicker stem than my other tomatoes and it’s stiffer — the branches don’t bend as easily.

    Just like roots

Madras Podding Radish Showing True Leaves and Tiny Farm garden
I’m keeping a close eye on these radishes since they are completely new to me. It’s interesting that the sprouts so closely resemble root radishes.

    Different speeds

Dragon's Tongue Beans Sprouting and Tiny Farm garden
My dragon’s tongue beans seem to be sprouting at different rates. Some are barely out of the ground, while others are already showing their true leaves. I took all these pictures just a few minutes ago — and look how different these two plants are! I think these beans are really pre...

    Almost there...

French Breakfast Radish and Tiny Farm garden
These radishes are almost ready to harvest. Maybe this weekend, maybe next week — but sometime soon, these radishes are toast. Urm, I mean, they’ll be on toast. With butter and a bit of salt. MMMmmmmmmm…… I can’t wait.

    The littlest spinach

New Zealand Spinach Sprouting and Tiny Farm garden
I noticed a teeny-weeny little sprout this morning, just barely above ground. I’m glad this plant is finally making an appearance.

Bush Blue Lake Beans and Tiny Farm garden
These have not yet sprouted. I’m starting to think I should plant something else in their place — other beans (the Dragon’s Tongue) that I planted later are coming up already.

    Planted more

Scallions Sown and Tiny Farm garden
I just planted more of these seeds. I read that this kind of onion will form a bulb that’s quite tasty. It can’t be stored, but it can be used. :) So I planted 8 more this morning.

    Sticking their tongues out!

Dragon's Tongue Beans Sprouting and Tiny Farm garden
These are starting to sprout. I think beans look like arms reaching out of the soil as they sprout. These germinated very fast — faster than the blue lake bush beans. Those still aren’t up, and I planted them 7 days before the Dragon’s Tongues.

Nasturtium Vine Sprouting and Tiny Farm garden

    Popper

New Zealand Spinach and Tiny Farm garden
How do you avoid floating your seeds away when you water? I water my garden by gently pouring water out of a cup onto the ground. First my kohlrabi seeds shifted, and now this one came totally out of the ground. It’s a very strange seed with a pointy end, and I found it sitting on top of ...

    An experiment

White Kohlrabi and Tiny Farm garden
When I planted these seeds, I decided to cover one with a mini-greenhouse made by cutting the bottom off a pop bottle. I wanted to see if the covered one would germinate any faster than the uncovered one. If you look at the large size pictures, you’ll see that the covered seed did germinat...

    Floating away

Purple Kohlrabi Sprouting and Tiny Farm garden
I believe these have sprouted, but I’m not sure. These seeds are small, but not tiny, like radish seeds. I think they must have migrated a bit when I watered my bed, because while they haven’t sprouted where I planted them — I have two tiny plants coming up near where I plante...

    Germination Problems

Bull's Blood Beets Sprouting and Tiny Farm garden
I’m having some problems with these seeds germinating. I know that beets are hard to germinate, but I’m having only a 25% success rate. I just replanted the missing beets with new seeds — this time I scuffed them up with a nail file before soaking them, then planted them. Wis...

    Stumped

    Tiny Farm garden
I’m feeling a bit stumped with my garden. I’ve filled it up with veggies, but I still have some blank spots. One of the rules I set for myself when I started this was “no trellises in year 1.” I’m starting to realize that my blank spots are where trellised plants ...
