Not a great year for gardening, but I'm fruiting 3
It’s been a fruitful year. It rained so much the tomatoes didn’t do much. We had a lot of peas, though. And some of the basil I forgot to water came back due to the rain. The crazy squirrel-feeding neighbor made it so all the broccoli and Brussels sprouts died as the pests dug up ever...

Flowering a second time 1 1 Snowbird peas Fruiting and Dominick's Tomato garden
These peas fruited early, and then flowered during the rainy spell. We’re now on our second round of peas from these plants. Something is nibbling the leaves, but otherwise, we’re good.

Did it rain while I was gone or are the zucchini pleased to see me? 1 2
We left for five days to visit a family member — we picked all the peas and strawberries and packed them in the car. We came back to find zucchini about six inches long, some blossom-end rot on the yellow squash, and the snow peas have flowered again. Goodness, we even have some cherry toma...

Vegetables, damnit 1 1 Pepper, Red , Miss Laurene's garden , Pepper Cubanelle , and Pepper, Jalapeno
Our landlady has a benevolent attitude toward our front yard. First it was “just pink and blue flowers,” then “weeded and neat” and now that has devolved into “you guys seem to keep things up. Just pull it up when you leave.” I’ve now taken that to mean &...

Old gardener said milk jugs would do it 2 2 Dominick's Tomato garden
I didn’t know what to do after rabbits or the porcupine ate the broccoli and the Brussels sprouts. My mom called around and found a gardener, this old school teacher who now has a landscaping business. He said cut out the bottoms of milk jugs — the rabbits can’t reach into them,...

OK, well now that I've gone and done it, what do I fill the hole with? 2 Backyard garden and Freaky shrub
You asked for photos, so here they are. To recap: Things are nuts at work, took a few days off to sort it out. Child (in photo) got stuck in the giant shrub/bush/juniper thing trying to help me clean out trash before we have a Kat-planted-everything-barbecue. I figured I’d just trim back th...

    Oops 1 4 Backyard garden
So I’m on holiday, and I’ve been ordered to stay off email and have fun. Which means garden, right? Tuesday afternoon, I was playing with the kids in the yard, trying to figure out what I’d do next. Tomatoes have to go in, I need to weed the front, I should replace the broccoli ...
