First rain of the 2008/09 Wet Season 2 6
The first raindrops in 167 days are joyfully received. The fall was heavy enough to wash the dust and ants from my plants, many of which have never had wet leaves before. The smell of wet earth as I type this is divine! (Edit about 30 minutes later) …..and the frogs have just started croaki...

Second season resulted in very tough stringy beans Winged Bean and Edible Container garden
Although this vine seems to be perennial, I found the second season of crop to be unpalatable. Even the beans picked whilst still small were extremely tough. I ended up just eating the flowers, which were still pleasant, and attempting to harvest the multitude of tubers. The tubers, too were toug...

Low yield plant, it seems Tomatoes 'Grosse Lisse' Harvesting and Edible Container garden
The yield on the surviving three Grosse Lisse plants has been disappointing. None of the fruit were particularly big, and so far there has been only about ten in total. Should consider a variety more suited to humid climates such as the “Tropic” variety, or maybe a roma.

Tommy Toes are great Tomato 'Tommy Toe' Harvesting and Edible Container garden
They taste delicious, prolific, appear to be more resistant to the tomato leaf roll (only lost one of the tommy toes, but heaps of all other varieties), early fruiters, and the kids eat them as “lollies” Definitely will grow these again.

The ginger ants love this plant 2 Snake Beans 'Black Seeded' Harvesting and Edible Container garden
These vines are now producing well. Only problem is that the vines and beans are infested with ginger ants which burn my hands as I pick the beans. It takes a fair amount of psyching up before each picking. I grab a bean, gently twist it off, then shake it to flick off the ants, and then quickly ...

Pak Tsoi bolting Pak Tsoi Flowering and Edible Container garden
This has been a very worthwhile planting, producing leaves for many salads. I’m amazed at how quickly new leaves grow after harvesting the outer ones.

Letting the beans dry on the vine Madagascar Bean Harvesting and Fruit and Veggie Patch garden
Once dried, these beans are easier to spot for picking. The vine has started going beserk. I hope it doesn’t become a problem to manage when the rains come. Each bean pod produces two or three beans, which I have been allowing to dry further on the kitchen bench before storing in a jar. Hop...

Lebanese cucumbers are great in the Tropics Cucumber 'Lebanese' Harvesting and Edible Container garden
No wonder these are plentiful at the local markets. They grow so easily and quickly. They appear to suffer the same yellowing problem as my luffa however, so I think they will be better suited growing in the veggie patch rather than containers.

Miniature miniatures = very tiny 1 1 Carrot 'Little Finger' Harvesting and Edible Container garden
Eating a freshly pulled carrot whilst playing in the garden should be a mandatory experience for every child. I remember such childhood joy in my grandfather’s garden. And now my children know how good carrots taste this way. However, note to self for next time: they will probably grow unde...

Chicken feed Button Squash 'Yellow Bush Scallop' and Edible Container garden
Prior to planting these I could not find any information on the suitability of button squash for the tropics. Leonie Norrington does not mention them in her Tropical Food Garden book. I decided anyhow to give it a go myself. They grew and produced fruit quickly, however the fruit were tiny and sp...
