    Soaker Hoses and Straw for Moisture retention

    Using soaker hoses and mulching with straw made a huge difference in how quickly the soil dried out. Particularly important for summer, 2012, as it was driest summer on record. Used approximately 1 +/- bale per section. 1/4 inch Soaker hose distributes approx 1 inch in 3 hours.

    Soaker Hoses

    The fewer twists and turns in the hose the better. Try to say out in rows as straight as possible. Avoid connecting multiple hoses if possible as it reduces flow. Clean out each hose with air compressor at beginning of year.

    Tomatoes

    Staked Tomatoes get bigger. Next year trim back to 1 or two main vines to tie to stake. Good for Beef Steaks. Consider Roma’s in cages. Beef steaks on stake. Romas firmer and good for cooking and salsa’s. Beef Steaks best for sandwiches and fresh eating. Consider going to 2 rows ...

    Bug Spray for Roses, Hollyhocks, peonies and Zinnias

    Hollyhock Returned from 2011
    Sprayed bug spray for Roses on Knockout rose, Hollyhocks and Zinnias about a week or so ago. The Hollyhocks at the side of the house were too far gone and will likely die. But the ones at the garden and by the side garage started getting better immediately. Hollyhocks leaves were turning yellow...

    Preen on Zinnia's at the end of Z5, Z6, Z7

    Lower Garden garden , Zinnia - Peppermint , Zinnia - Candy Mixed , and Zinnia - Chippendale
    Put preen on Zinnia’s at the end of Z5, Z6, Z7. Zinnia starts were about 1" tall — watch to see if they were too young to add preen.
