Ants, Ants, ANTS! A GIANT Colony.
Veggie Lab gardenSo, I’ve been really busy lately with non-garden stuff and haven’t been keeping a close eye on things, and during this time a HUGE colony of ants has invaded my garden. I think these are Argentine ants, due to their habit of building a nest in the most lazy freakin’ way possibl...Sunny 38°C / 100°F -

Testing My Memory I: Notes on Crazy Quilt Garden
Crazy Quilt gardenOK, girl, these journal entries don’t just write themselves! I am terrible at note-keeping. Even though the Folia format makes it easier, I still, ya’ know, need to actually need to WRTE the durn things. I’ve popped in to mark a few milestones in the past couple of weeks, bu...Storms 34°C / 93°F -

Whew! Long overdue for a journal entry. Of course nothing happens when I have time to write a journal, then everything happens at once and I have no time for writing. However, I am TRYING to suppress my disorganized nature and keep up with things this year, so I’m going to do my best to ...35°C / 95°F -

Slugs/Snails: So Crazy It Just Might Work --Or Just Plain Crazy?
I admit, I haven’t put much TOO much thought into this, but…. I was wondering: if slugs/snails LOVE yeast/beer so much, could you spray undesirable plants (weeds) with yeast solution/beer and the slugs would ignore your garden of eatin’ but eat up the weeds? I guess I’m...Sunny 18°C / 65°F -

So, What Was I Worried About Again?
Veggie Lab garden , Wildflower 'Mixed' Dying, and CQ Herb: Basil 'Genovese'It’s been a few days since the last storm and cold weather, and things are looking pretty good in the Veggie Lab. Although there were a few little problems, in general everything looks great, with lots of new growth. The temp got down to about 40F, and the highs were about 50F during the c...Sunny 21°C / 70°F -

This Cold is Not Cool at All, or: Yes, I'm Complaining Again
Veggie Lab garden , Shrub Mess garden , and Crazy Quilt gardenLots of rain and still more coming. 42F last night. I don’t need this rain and cold, I’ve had plenty this spring, thankyouverymuch! There are others just to the southwest of me who REALLY need it —like flowerweaver. OK, enough complaining. I just need to buckle down and try...Rainy 8°C / 47°F -

Everybody Talks About the Weather But...; or: A Big, Bad, Long, Long Update
VL Onion: Red Sweet Bulb Budding, VL Tomato: Supersweet 100 Blooming, VL Tomato: Better Boy Blooming, VL T...UGH! We had lots of weird weather this spring (even for Texas!). There was a hot-cold-hot-cold cycle early on: 3-4 days of highs around 85-90F, then a few days with the lows near freezing (33-40F), then shooting back up again into the 80F range. Add to that high winds (60mph at some points, a...Cloudy 16°C / 60°F -

Hungry-Hungry Something-or-Others
Veggie Lab garden and Lots o' Pots gardenRain today and last night measures 3/4" so far, and more rain in the forecast today and tomorrow. It was a pretty rough/windy storm, but luckily the hail missed me this time —so I still have blooms left. I got all of my stakes/supports in yesterday just ahead of the storm, and IR...Cloudy 24°C / 76°F -
