I became a 1st time homeowner on Christmas Eve 2008. Though I’ve always had a rather brown thumb, something about owning land has sparked this need to cultivate it (must be from growing up in the corn-belt). I’ve only got a 125′ × 35′ lot and my house takes up most of that, but I’ve got a nice flower bed out front and a postage stamp of a back lawn that I’m going to squeeze a vegetable garden into. I’m also planning a container herb garden for my deck.
With the recession I’ve been doing my best to adhere to my self-imposed Zero-Spend Challenge – making do with materials and plants that are reclaimed, swapped, donated by family and friends, or grown from seeds. I live in Chicago proper and I’m finding urban gardening has it’s own challenges and benefits.
I blog about my garden progress and my other crafty endeavors at http://fearlesscrafts.wordpress.com/
