It’s getting so that every time I step through the gate during daylight hours, the groundhog is there. So far, I’ve only seen her browsing in the lawn, but she already has plenty of lawn on her side of the fence where her burrow is under our neighbor’s compost pile. What she doe...Overcast 19°C / 66°F -

I’m writing this pre-coffee, so it’s gonna be brief! Hopefully, it will also be coherent. ;-) I almost feel like I owe Wal-Mart an apology for my skepticism about whether their 20 cent packet of sunflower seeds would actually germinate, because… it has! What’s more, it ger...Overcast 20°C / 68°F -

12°C / 54°FLast night as we were preparing for bed, the spouse asked me a terrifying question. This is his speciality, asking a question that implies the need for corrective action, but asking at a time when action isn’t possible. (He loves to have these discussions during car rides, too.) Anyway, he ...

These seedlings were way too unhappy in their seed pots. I’m relieved to have finally gotten them planted out. Not on the list (I need to update) are Browallia from a local seed exchange and a Solomon’s Seal that I discovered & transplanted next to my variegated Solomon’s Seal.12°C / 54°F -

Teeny tiny little praying mantis
Sunny 18°C / 65°FThe little hatchlings are showing up in the garden. We’ve always been well supplied with praying mantids. They’re so tiny this time of year, you can very nearly miss seeing them. This one is resting on a wild violet. Not such a bad pic, considering it was taken with my iPhone.

It tends to be an early producer, so I’m not surprised that the Fargo Yellow Pear is the first of my tomato plants to flower. But the plants are still rather small…seems like they still have a lot more growing to do! (Will have to come back and update for the Kitchen Garden and the pl...Sunny 18°C / 65°F -

Because I really want to be in the "I can grow lettuce" club
Lettuce, Black Seeded Simpson - Strawberry Pot and Courtyard gardenSunny 28°C / 82°FAlthough I recently learned, to my surprise, that there’s a certain solidarity to belonging to the ‘I can’t grow lettuce’ club, I’d rather be a member of the club that can – and does – grow lettuce. After recently archiving all my winter-sown lettuce, whi...

Sunny 28°C / 83°FThey’re also growing rather quickly. I’m finding it a bit of a challenge to keep up with the mulching!
