Windy 15°C / 59°FThe papaya seemed to pause the ripening of its fruit during the month of December, but right at the New Year the first of the many papayas turned yellow. Three of the fruits have ripened by now and the progression up the tree continues. Unfortunately, between the lack of direct sun in its corner ...

Pineapple Tops Now that i’ve assigned a space for the pineapples, i want to fill it up! I have the nice Del Monte Gold plant i started a year ago that i want to use, but the catch is that i usually buy some no-name brand of fresh pineapple on sale for $2 at El Presidente, and i have read th...

Local banana, longtime living in a half barrel, finds a home
Adopt-a-Jackfruit Planting Out, Adopt-a-Lychee Planting Out, Potbound banana Planting Out, and Adopt-a-Mang...Overcast 25°C / 77°FWith the decision to go ahead and plant my container trees even with the possibility of moving in the near future, the ‘Ice Cream’ banana was high priority. It has been confined to its half barrel planter for about a year, and has sent up three pups in consternation and claustrophobia...

Planning a planting is daunting
Emerald blueberry , Maybe-i'm-lacking-faith Miracle Tree , Adopt-a-Lychee , and Potbound bananaSunny 25°C / 77°FI have kept most of my perennials in containers because i had anticipated a move to a different address. The time has come to plant many of them, impending move or not, and i have been planning. Planting a tree seems like such a momentous and permanent thing that i want to make sure i think this ...

Potato harvest (in December?!)
Camote: like kudzu, but useful Harvesting, Camote: like kudzu, but useful , and Backyard gardenCloudy 27°C / 81°F
Well, i finally dug the sweet potatoes. I’ve been a bit afraid to find out how the experiment turned out, and also curious if the vines would ever die back on their own. Unless we get a frost, i don’t think they are going away, and i want to get tomatoes in the ground soon, so today w...

Cloudy 24°C / 75°F
I first spotted this on the sweet potato leaves, but it may have spread to the carambola tree. It appears as a distortion of the leaf that appears in extreme form as a discolored canker/blister. It looks like it might be a fungus but the odd distortion of the leaves makes me think of something vi...

My first fall as a gardener in South Florida is here and the weather is gorgeous, with cool nights and tolerable days, and less humidity all around. One can’t help but notice, however, that unlike in the frozen north where i was raised, the beautiful weather in Miami coincides with the shor...

The Edible Garden Festival of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden was this past weekend, and I finally managed to make my second visit as a card-carrying member. I biked the majority of it, getting me a notch in my member award card toward a free guest pass (!) and making a beautiful day even nicer...Cloudy 28°C / 83°F -

The massive wind and rain storm that lasted all weekend took down the carambola and mangled one side brace of my backyard canopy. I added another guyline to the center of the weakened strut (confounded plastic hinges) and pruned back about eighteen inches each from the two leaders of the carambol...Storms 31°C / 88°F -
