My first gardening was a few tomatoe plants my father planted along with his big garden. My tomatoes were shaped like little yellow light bulbs. He grew corn that was twice as tall as he was and huge potatoes that were too large to put in a kettle. Along with his large vegetable gardens he had a big yard with azaleas, rhododendrons and many more beautiful plants and shrubs. He farmed in the Willamete Valley of Oregon. For some years he owned an island of about 150 acres in the Willamete River where he raised barley and sheep. On the mainland where we lived he raised alfalfa, pigs and more barley. After he gave up farming he still had large gardens until he was in his 90’s. I credit gardening for his good health. I don’t raise big gardens but I have lots of plants and I seem to have inherited some of his ability for growing them.

I am not good at remembering names of plants and I never new the name of some of them. Most were purchased as very small plants and botanical names were not provided. I shall try to update plant names as I can find them..
