Turnip greens Not much
These haven’t done much. They did really well in early spring, but my autumn sowing hardly germinated. The spring sowing was early in the year (relatively cold weather) in a shady spot, the autumn sowing was in late August, in a sunnier spot. Too warm maybe?

Lettuce 'Wonder der vier jaargetijden' Moved: Too wet
This container didn’t have any drainage holes, oops. The lettuce was swimming around and wasn’t growing all that much either – I might have sowed them too close together. So, I emptied the pot and planted out the bigger ones in the veggie bed. They’ve got more space now, but with snow on the way I’m not sure whether they’ll survive..

Carrot 'Nantes' Harvesting: Tiny
Small carrots. I don’t think the flavor was all that pronounced, by I didn’t try them raw, I put them in a (pretty spicy) soup. I left a few in the ground, to see what they taste like raw. Hopefully they’ll grow a little bit more, now that they’ve got some space.

Spring onion Sown
I sowed three garlic cloves, together with three spring onion roots in a small container on the kitchen window sill. The garlic cloves came up very quickly. The spring onions might have been too old, we’ll wait and see.

Lemon Proust's madeleine
These little citrus seedlings haven’t grown much. I planted a lemon and a tangerine seed last year, and they both sprouted. They both were about 3 inches tall – I say ‘were’ because I tossed one of them out, since it wasn’t looking too healthy. Except, I can’t remember which one, so I’m keeping both entries…
I don’t really expect it – the remaining seedling – to fruit or grow into a tall citrus tree, but I am hanging on to it because of the smell. Whenever I rub the leaves, especially new growth, I get this amazing citrus blossom smell, which immediately transports me back to vacations in Portugal and Spain. It works like a treat :)

So many alliums, so little time
Somehow I’ve become obsessed with alliums, particulary the rare and unusual kinds. We all know regular old allium cepa (onion), allium porrum (leek) or allium sativum (garlic), but tell me which supermarket carries ‘nodding onion’ or ’lady’s leek’ (allium cernuum) or ‘crow garlic’ (allium vineale). Well, I’ve ordered a number (seeds and bulbs) and have already planted out a few and can’t wait to find out what they look and taste like.
