    Onions for week 5

Mini Onion (purple) - wk5 Sown, Mini Onion (white) - wk5 Sown, and Patio Veggie garden
At this point in the planting schedule I am 2 weeks behind in my onions; all six sets should have been in the ground by now. So I decided to plant the last two sets together this week; at least it’s going to stay cool for another week so they shouldn’t have too much trouble. I hope.

Veggie musical chairs, and a maple

Cucumber 2 Hardening Off, Cherry Tomatoes Showing True Leaves, Green Japanese Maple Sown, Kitchen Windowsil...
Image 1: Even though it’s most likely too cold, I’m starting to harden off my cucumbers. I’m hoping that by next weekend it warms up enough so I can plant them outside. Still not sure about what I’m going to do with the other three. Try to find people to give them to, I ho...

    Potted new belle pepper seedlings

Golden Baby Belle2 Germinating, Golden Baby Belle2 Potting Up, Kitchen Windowsill garden , and Patio Veggie...
Not letting these rot this time. Two of the six seeds had clear signs of germination, one looked like it was going to pop in a day or two, and the last three looked like duds but I potted them anyway. If this round doesn’t take off I may just skip peppers this year and try again next year, ...

    Oh deer!

    Frontyard garden
As I was prepping some seeds to mail out, I heard my cat crying in the front room, which faces my front yard. Expecting one of our neighbors cats (which is what he’s usually crying about), I went out and to my surprise it was not a cat but a large deer. Nibbling on one of my rose bushes. I ...

    Quick veggie update

Spinach - started inside Growing, Spinach - wk1 Growing, Spinach - wk2 Growing, Carrots (baby) - wk1 Growin...
Quick update on carrots and spinach after a long day of heavy rain. Image 1: Spinach started inside is doing well, finally holding itself up somewhat decently. The leaves are darkening and I’m thinking I’ll pick the outermost ones this weekend and make a salad, or sauté some with past...

    Transplanting cukes question

Cucumber 2 Growing, Kitchen Windowsill garden , and Patio Veggie garden
My not-so-little cucumbers need to be potted up, and I finally got some 6" pots to move them to. However! As you can see in the picture they’re ranging from 2.5"-3.5" tall, and I was wondering if I should be covering some of the stalk when I transplant them? I’m hoping ...

    Cherry tomatoes sprouting

Cherry Tomatoes Sprouting, Kitchen Windowsill garden , and Patio Veggie garden
Happy birthday me! Also my cherry tomatoes started sprouting (4 of 6) despite me thinking that they’d all died for sure over the weekend since they hadn’t been watered; they were completely dry when I got home, but seem just fine now. EDIT: 5th of 6 came up on the 25th, still waiting ...

First batch of belle peppers molded

Golden Baby Belle1 Dying, Golden Baby Belle2 Sown, Kitchen Windowsill garden , and Patio Veggie garden
It’s my fault for leaving them in the towel for too long, but this first round of belle peppers rotted/molded; must have sprayed them with too much water before heading out of town for the weekend. Threw them out and started another 6, will keep a closer eye on these. Img1: close up of rott...

    More Purple Dragon sprouts

Carrots (purple) - wk4 Sprouting and Patio Veggie garden
The purple dragon carrots that I started in a paper towel last week have already started coming up (score!). Not all of them, but honestly more than I expected; there are 7 or 8 of them up out of 39, and as I said in the previous journal for this planting I’m pretty sure I killed the roots ...
