I was lucky enough to have a Italian born stepfather-in-law who introduced me to the joys of the potager in his beautiful home in Provence about 10 years ago. His love of gardening was infectious: the way he would pore over the newest seed catalogs. I laughed then but now I am beginning to understand!
My own father is also an avid gardener & has been since I can remember. Even on our small terrace in an apartment in the suburban Pennsylvania town I grew up in, he grew eggplants and tomatoes and educated us on what these vegetables should “really” taste like. He is my teacher and helper now as we take to the garden this spring.
I savor memories of helping Dad plant a veggie plot in the back garden of our first home and the masses of zucchini and tomatoes we ate all summer long! I loved the satisfaction of digging in the dirt, smelling the earth, losing time out in the garden and then the excitement of watching the plants grow.
Now that I have a family and am feeding two young kids (and a health conscious husband!) — I am appreciating the time I have to cultivate a vegetable garden. It is already a joy and a much anticipated family project that spans generations. We are trying to go as organic as we possibly can — learning along the way — because we think it’s best for everyone.
I look forward to the pleasure of harvesting our own vegetables and nourishing our family and friends with them!
