I’m fortunate to garden on 2 acres of land in suburbia and have a husband who doesn’t berate my sometimes excessive (and expensive) acquisitions to fill the 2 acres with my passion for daylilies, lilies, iris, and various bulbs, perennials, annuals, and shrubs.
I’ve been gardening for about 6 years now. I’ve been in my present home for 4 growing seasons. The first season I did little else, but move some prized daylilies from my old home before it sold. Best to wait and see what pops up and blooms the first season anyway. As it turned out the previous owner wasn’t much of a gardener and while there is beautiful foundation backbones with healthy, large shrubs for year round interest there was virtually zero blooming flowers. 2006 wasn’t a good year for me for gardening as we decided to put in a large in ground swimming pool and from about August on my backyard was a construction zone. Pool construction ran into a lot of major issues and was not completed until May 2007. I did do quite a bit in 2007 and was in full swing acquiring plants. I bought lots of lilies and iris that year and got my new collections of those genus going. 2008 brought the addition of spring-blooming bulbs and more variety of perennials, more lilies and a start of a new rose collection.
In 2007 I experimented at trying my hand at adding herbs and tomatoes to the mix of flowers I grow. I did a container garden of various pots of herbs on my deck. I planted 2 tomato plants out in the East Pool bed. The herbs did very well although the tomatoes struggled. That led to the desire in 2008 to try a veggie garden. Big plans for three 4-foot x 12-foot raised beds were formulated and my husband bought the lumber. And that was that. Nary a raised bed was built until in September I jumped up and down fretting where I was going to plant the garlic I special ordered for fall planting. He broke down and built me 1 4×12-foot bed to get me going. (Now how to get the other 2 beds completed before the snow flies?) I’d like to at least get the other two built and filled with top soil/compost mix to sit fallow all winter.
My Plantings and Gardens here on folia are still being entered, so check back often to see my additions. It may take me awhile . . . although doing it during winter will be quicker than trying to do it during the full swing of growing season.
